Senior presidential advisor on military affairs, Lt Gen Proscovia Nalweyiso, has proposed that the presidential term be extended beyond five years, arguing that the current term is too short for a president to fully implement their manifesto.
While appearing on Radio 4, Nalweyiso noted that five years is not enough for a president to effectively execute their duties.
“The presidency requires a longer period of stable leadership—at least ten years,” Lt. Gen. Nalweyiso said.
She added that if she were a Member of Parliament, she would advocate for the extension of the presidential term in Parliament.
“If I were a member of parliament, I would take the lead in proposing and supporting a motion to extend the presidential term to ten years.”
The highest ranking female officer in Uganda’s military also commented on the recently concluded presidential nominations, noting that President Museveni deserves another term in office.
She explained that some aspirants failed to secure the necessary signatures to qualify for the ballot.
“If every candidate who planned to contest the presidency in 2026 were nominated, the voting process might take up to 20 days,” she added, highlighting the logistical challenges of accommodating a large field of presidential aspirants.
