Gone are the days when electricity officials and consumers were seen as adversaries.
Since the Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) took over power distribution, the company has worked to bridge the gap between users and distributors, a feat highlighted by their WETEREZeeee campaign.
The campaign, which provides customers with amnesty and free meter replacements, has encouraged residents to return to electricity offices and regularize their connections.
“For as long as I have lived, electricity distributors were always seen as enemies, but with UEDCL things have changed,” said Simon Mubiru, a resident of Nankulabye.
Mubiru praised UEDCL’s approach to community engagement, noting that staff present themselves professionally in branded attire, which has helped build trust and eliminate rogue operators, commonly referred to as “Kamyufu.”
“They are easy to approach, and the way they represent themselves now ensures that people don’t fall prey to quacks claiming to be electricity officials,” he said.
The WETEREZeeee campaign has become a symbol of improved customer relations, demonstrating that transparent and people-focused outreach can rebuild trust between electricity distributors and consumers.
UEDCL officials say the initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance service delivery, eliminate fraud, and bring more residents onto the formal electricity network.
