NUP’s Secretary General, David Lewis Rubongoya, has declared his intention to challenge Hajjat Minsa Kabanda’s victory as Kampala Central Division Member of Parliament, citing alleged electoral malpractice.
Kabanda, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidate, won the January 15 election with 22,332 votes, beating Rubongoya’s 18,242 by a margin of 4,090 votes.
Speaking to journalists on Wednesday, Rubongoya accused Kabanda of manipulating the results.
“I won 17 out of the 20 parishes in Kampala Central, but my victory was stolen,” he said.
He alleged that Kabanda worked with security personnel at polling stations, including Nakasero State House and Summit View, to inflate votes.
Rubongoya also said his polling agents were blocked from some stations, preventing them from monitoring the process.
Rubongoya insisted he will file an election petition to ensure the alleged irregularities are formally recorded.
“There is no guarantee of justice, but we must submit the evidence so that the truth is documented,” he said.
