The Special Forces Command has trashed reports that it had blocked journalists in Entebbe from covering the ruling NRM party primaries.
A post on X by the government broadcaster, quoting its reporter from Entebbe, Sulah Kagugube indicated that journalists had been blocked from accessing Busambaga polling station in Entebbe Municipality on Thursday afternoon.
However, in a statement, SFC spokesperson, Maj Jimmy Dennis Omara said the reports are unfounded since there was no face-off or altercation between SFC personnel and members of the media in Entebbe.
He said, in the alternative, there was calmness across all areas “where our families participated in the election of their preferred candidates, including Kampala District.”
“No single journalist was stopped from accessing the said polling station. To the contrary, they were the first people to be granted access to the polling station by police so as to exercise their right of covering news,” Maj Omara said.
The SFC spokesperson said with the process being calm, there was nothing warranting a square off between their officers and members of the media, questioning the intention of the reports.
“We believe that the post was written in bad faith, and, with intentions to malign the good image of the Special Forces Command. Even at the time of writing this release, Mr. Kagugube was still present at the polling station and he denied being stopped from accessing the station,” Maj Omara.
“ We ask members of the press to uphold the highest principles of journalism and should desist from writing stories intended to spread discord amongst the innocent members of the public.”
Maj Omara asked members of the public to ignore the reports “with the contempt” they deserve.
