Three police officers attached to the Busia border post have been remanded to prison for allegedly aiding the escape of a key suspect in a multi-million-dollar gold scam under investigation by the State House Anti-Corruption Unit (SH-ACU).
The officers were on Tuesday afternoon arraigned before the Anti-Corruption Court by the State House Anti-Corruption Unit, working jointly with the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP).
The accused officers are Assistant Inspector of Police (AIP) Godfrey Kali, Corporal Peter Owiny (No. 48527) and Corporal Oscar Odul (No. 47882).
They were charged with abuse of office, aiding a prisoner to escape, and conspiracy to defeat justice.
Prosecution told court that between 22 and 23 December 2025, while deployed to Interpol and the terrorism tactical unit at Busia Customs Office, the three officers abused their authority by arbitrarily aiding the escape of Najib Kasule, a suspect who had been intercepted at the Uganda–Kenya border.
Kasule is described as a key suspect in an international gold scam, in which an American national was allegedly defrauded of more than USD 840,000.
The scam is currently under investigation by the State House Anti-Corruption Unit.
The three officers were not allowed to take plea as investigations are still ongoing.
Court remanded them to prison until 21 January 2025.
