The UPDF has reaffirmed its strong defence ties with India, as the Chief of Joint Staff, Major General Jack Bakasumba, commended the Indian Armed Forces for their consistent support in training and capacity-building efforts.
Speaking at a farewell event for four Indian military officers who concluded their two-year tour of duty in Uganda, Maj Gen Bakasumba expressed deep appreciation for India’s longstanding commitment to Uganda’s military development.
“Thank you most sincerely for the training support you are giving us. We truly appreciate it and do not take it for granted. A friend in need is a friend indeed,” he stated during the ceremony held at the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs (MODVA) Headquarters in Mbuya.
The departing officers had been embedded within key UPDF departments including Operations, Communications, and the Air Force where they contributed to strategic training and development initiatives.
As they prepare to return to India later this month, their roles will be filled by a new team of Indian officers expected to arrive shortly.
The meeting also served as a platform for both sides to explore avenues for deepening bilateral military cooperation, particularly in areas such as professional training and infrastructure development.
Brigadier General Bhupendra Singh, who headed the Indian team, expressed gratitude for the support and collaboration extended by the UPDF during their mission.
“On behalf of the people of India, I would like to express our gratitude for all the assistance we received from the Office of the Chief of Joint Staff during our stay here,” said Brig Gen Singh.
The Indian military officers were stationed primarily at the Senior Command and Staff College Kimaka, where they played a pivotal role in mentoring and instructing Ugandan officers across a range of disciplines.
Uganda and India enjoy a long-standing defence partnership marked by the presence of Indian military training teams in Uganda, training exchanges in India for Ugandan officers, and regular professional collaborations aimed at building shared capabilities.
