The Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) has extended the registration period for candidates sitting the 2026 Primary Leaving Examination (PLE), Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE), and Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE).
Speaking to journalists at the Media Centre on Friday, Dan Odongo, the UNEB Executive Director, said the extension aims to accommodate newly accredited examination centres and ensure all candidates are properly registered.
“Normal registration for the 2026 examinations has now been extended to 30th June, 2026. Late registration, which attracts a surcharge, will run from 1st to 31st July, 2026, after which no further registration will be allowed,” Odongo explained.
He emphasized that the government will continue to pay registration fees for candidates sponsored under Universal Primary Education (UPE), Universal Secondary Education (USE), and the Universal Post O-Level Education and Training (UPOLET) programs.
According to UNEB, private candidates are required to pay Shs 34,000 for PLE, Shs 164,000 for UCE, and Shs 186,000 for UACE.
Odongo further highlighted specific registration requirements for each level. PLE candidates must ensure the correct spelling and order of names, drawn from birth certificates or NIRA forms.
UCE candidates must register for a minimum of eight and a maximum of nine subjects, with Continuous Assessment and project scores submitted for certification.
UACE candidates must have passed UCE and completed at least two years of Advanced Level courses.
The Board also cautioned school heads against fraudulent practices such as misrepresenting privately sponsored candidates as government-sponsored or charging unauthorized fees.
“Anyone found misappropriating registration fees or violating UNEB regulations risks fines up to UGX 40 million, imprisonment, and de-registration,” Odongo warned.
To ensure transparency, UNEB requires schools to display candidate registers on noticeboards sixty days before the start of the examinations.
Parents and guardians are encouraged to verify the accuracy of their children’s details, including names, date of birth, gender, photograph, and subjects offered.
UNEB noted that the registration status can also be checked via SMS by sending the candidate’s full index number to 6600.
Odongo reminded candidates that erasable pens are not permitted during any UNEB examinations.
