Government has ordered the immediate closure of all schools operating under the Maranatha Programme following the deadly attack at Ggaba Early Childhood Day Care Centre, where four pupils were killed on Thursday.
The affected institutions, managed by Ggaba Community Church, include Maranatha High School, Ggaba Primary School, and Ggaba Early Childhood Day Care Centre.
The directive was issued by the State Minister for Higher Education, John Chrysostom Muyingo, during an inspection visit to the schools on Friday.
“All schools under the Maranatha programme are to be closed immediately, and a comprehensive report on what transpired must be submitted without delay,” Muyingo said.
He also instructed parents to immediately pick up their children from the affected schools.
The move follows a tragic incident in which a man identified as Christopher Okello Anyu allegedly posed as a parent, gained access to the day care centre after paying admission fees, and attacked the children, killing four of them.
Muyingo condemned the attack and assured the public that the government is taking steps to support those affected.
“Psychological support and counselling services are being arranged to help the school community cope with the trauma,” he said, adding that the government will provide full support to the families of the victims.
The minister said a nationwide review of school security underway, adding that government remains committed to ensuring that all schools in Uganda are safe for every child.
