The outgoing Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Thomas Tayebwa, has said he will comply with whatever decision President Yoweri Museveni makes regarding his next political position.
Tayebwa made the remarks on Friday while speaking to journalists at Parliament after taking the oath as Ruhinda North Member of Parliament.
He was responding to questions about whether he would seek another term as Deputy Speaker in the upcoming 12th Parliament.
“I want to thank the President, who first gave me an opportunity to serve as Government Chief Whip. Thereafter, he promoted me, and I served as Deputy Speaker. Now, my duty as a true cadre of the party is to wait for further instructions from him. I have to dutifully and 100% comply with whatever instructions he gives me,” Tayebwa said.
His remarks come amid growing debate over the next leadership of Parliament ahead of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker elections scheduled for May 15, 2026.
The race has intensified following the endorsement of Defence Minister Jacob Oboth-Oboth for Speaker by the Chief of Defence Forces, Muhoozi Kainerugaba.
The development has sparked speculation about the possible composition of Parliament’s top leadership positions, which traditionally balance gender between the Speaker and Deputy Speaker.
Tayebwa also defended the performance of the 11th Parliament, saying it had passed critical legislation supporting government programmes and national development.
“The performance has been excellent. We have supported all government programmes and passed critical bills like the Petroleum Supply Amendment Bill, which has strengthened the country’s fuel supply security,” he said.
He added that the next Parliament should prioritise fighting corruption at all levels and expanding free universal education across the country.
