Global blockchain company Binance has announced a humanitarian contribution of $125,000 (approximately Shs487 million) to support the Uganda Red Cross Society in responding to the ongoing Ebola outbreak in Uganda.
The funding will be directed towards urgent interventions in affected and high-risk communities, including strengthening community awareness and prevention campaigns, enhancing contact tracing and surveillance systems, supporting risk communication and community engagement, and providing essential supplies and protective equipment for frontline health workers.
The Ebola outbreak has placed considerable strain on health systems and communities in affected areas, prompting a coordinated response involving government agencies, humanitarian organisations, and public health partners working to contain the spread of the virus and protect vulnerable populations.
Binance said its support is intended to reinforce these ongoing efforts at a critical time, particularly in communities where access to timely health information, protective resources, and emergency response services remains limited.
A key focus of the intervention is enabling rapid response in underserved and high-risk areas, while supporting both immediate containment measures and longer-term community awareness initiatives aimed at reducing transmission.
“Communities across Africa continue to show extraordinary resilience in the face of complex challenges, but frontline responders should not have to face crises like this alone,” said Richard Teng, Chief Executive Officer of Binance.
“The Uganda Red Cross Society is playing a vital role in supporting communities, raising awareness, and strengthening outbreak response efforts. We are proud to support their work as they help protect vulnerable populations and deliver critical assistance where it is needed most,” he added.
Uganda Red Cross Society Secretary General Robert Kwesiga welcomed the support, describing it as timely in strengthening emergency response efforts.
“Strong partnerships are essential during public health emergencies. The support from Binance comes at a critical time and will help us respond more rapidly, reach more at-risk communities, and reinforce frontline services needed to help contain the outbreak and save lives,” Kwesiga said.
He thanked Binance for its commitment to supporting communities during times of urgent need.
The initiative reflects Binance’s broader engagement in Africa, where it supports programmes focused on education, financial inclusion, digital skills development, and community empowerment.
The company said it is encouraging more private sector players operating in the region to support humanitarian and public health responses, particularly during emergencies that require coordinated action across sectors.
