Princess Diana Teyeggala Balizzamugale, sister to Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II, was laid to rest on Monday at the Kasubi Royal Tombs, as mourners from across Uganda gathered to bid farewell to a member of the Buganda royal family.
The burial rites began with prayers at St. Andrews Church, Kasubi–Nabulagala, where the late Princess lay in repose. The service was attended by Nnabagereka Sylvia Nagginda, princes and princesses of Buganda, senior royal family members led by Prince David Wassajja, the Katikkiro of Buganda Charles Peter Mayiga, government officials, clergy, and members of the public.
Leading the prayers, Rev. Canon Saava David Mpagi, Archdeacon of Kazo, conveyed condolences to the Kabaka and the royal family, describing the loss as deeply painful for both Buganda and the nation.
Tributes highlighted Princess Diana as courageous, principled, and deeply committed to unity. Speaking on behalf of the family, Prince David Kintu Wassajja remembered his sister as honest and fearless, urging the people of Buganda to uphold unity, mutual care, and respect, values she championed throughout her life.
Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga praised the late Princess for her love for people and her strong societal views, while also commending the Kabaka for the care and medical attention he provided her until her final days. Namirembe Diocese Bishop Moses Banja also offered words of comfort to the grieving family.
After the church service, the body was escorted to the Kasubi Royal Tombs amid traditional royal drums. In keeping with Buganda customs, it was received into the sacred Muzibu Azaala Mpanga, before the final rites were conducted in the courtyard under the guidance of Nalinnya Beatrice Namikka.
Born in 1966, Princess Diana was a daughter of the late Kabaka Edward Muteesa II and a younger sister to Kabaka Mutebi II. She never met her father, who died in exile when she was a child. Her burial at Kasubi marks a solemn farewell to a princess remembered for her honesty, courage, and devotion to Buganda’s values.
