MTN Mobile Money Uganda has appointed Sarah Bateta Okwi as its Acting Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, effective 1 March 2026, following the decision by Richard Yego to step down from the role.
Okwi, who currently serves as Chief Finance Officer, will assume the position in an acting capacity as the company’s Board initiates the process of recruiting a substantive Chief Executive Officer.
Her appointment comes at a critical juncture as MTN Mobile Money Uganda continues its transition into a fully independent fintech entity, separate from MTN Uganda’s core telecommunications business.
Richard Yego is set to formally exit the role at the end of February 2026, concluding a four-year tenure during which MTN Mobile Money Uganda recorded significant growth and transformation.
Under his leadership, the company expanded its product offerings, deepened digital financial inclusion, strengthened regulatory compliance, and consolidated its position as one of Uganda’s leading digital financial services providers.
The Board of Directors expressed appreciation for Yego’s leadership and contribution to the growth and success of the mobile money business.
Commenting on the transition, Serigne Dioum, CEO of MTN Group Fintech, said, “We thank Richard sincerely for his leadership, dedication, and contribution to MTN MoMo Uganda over the past four years. He has helped establish strong foundations for the business, and we wish him every success in his next chapter.”
Okwi brings nearly 20 years of experience within the MTN Group, having held several senior leadership roles across the organisation. In her role as Chief Finance Officer, she has been instrumental in strengthening financial governance, enhancing regulatory compliance, and building operational resilience at MTN Mobile Money Uganda.
She holds a Bachelor of Commerce Degree in Accounting from Makerere University Business School and is an FCCA and CPA(U).
In a statement, the board assured customers, partners and stakeholders that the company remains stable and fully operational, with all services continuing uninterrupted during the leadership transition.
