The St. Augustine Catholic Community at Makerere University will on Sunday, April 12, celebrate 85 years of existence, marking a long history of faith, service, and spiritual guidance within Uganda’s premier university.
Unlike previous celebrations, this year’s event will be held at Makerere Freedom Square, bringing together students, alumni, clergy, and guests for a major thanksgiving mass.
The main celebrant will be the Archbishop of Kampala, Paul Ssemogerere, who will lead a mass beginning at 10:00am.
The celebrations will run under the theme: “Our hearts are restless until they rest in you, Oh Lord.”
The Chief Guest will be Vice President Jessica Alupo, expected to join the Catholic community in marking the milestone.
St. Augustine Chapel, which traces its origins back to 1929, was constructed by the White Fathers and has since served thousands of Catholic faithful at Makerere University, both students and non-students.
Over the years, the chaplaincy has been guided by notable leaders, including Cardinal Emmanuel Wamala, the first native chaplain, Monsignor Lawrence Kanyike, and the current chaplain, Father Josephat Ddungu.
The community says the 85-year milestone reflects decades of spiritual growth, leadership, and service to the university community.
The celebrations also come at a time when the community is raising Shs2 billion to support the expansion of the student centre, aimed at improving facilities for worship, fellowship, and student engagement.
