As part of the 17th edition of the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Cup activities, the UPDF joined local residents in Masaka to plant trees and raise environmental awareness.
The exercise, held in Kijjabwemi, was officiated by Major General Deus Sande, Commander of the Armoured Division, who hailed the growing partnership between soldiers and civilians.
“This activity illustrates the positive relationship between civilians and the UPDF. Previously, when civilians saw a soldier, they would often run away. Now, it is great to see this collaboration,” Maj Gen Sande said.
He added that the initiative is intended as a model for environmental stewardship in the region.
“We chose a specific area in Masaka to plant trees as an example so that people can recognize the importance of tree planting and the need to protect our environment,” he explained.
Brigadier General Richard Karemire, Joint Staff Education, Sports, and Culture, emphasized that tree planting is a key strategy in the fight against climate change.
“We face the challenge of climate change, and as the UPDF, we remain committed to partnering with local residents to address this issue and protect our climate,” he said.
Brig Gen Karemire also called for community education on waste management.
“We need to educate our population against littering, such as leaving behind plastic bags and bottles, to keep our environment clean,” he noted.
Ahamada Washaki, the Resident City Commissioner of Masaka District, commended the initiative and thanked President Museveni for supporting such impactful programmes.
The tree planting exercise brought together UPDF officers, government officials, militants, and community members, reflecting a shared commitment to environmental protection and civic collaboration.
