Manchester United have dismissed head coach Ruben Amorim following a 1-1 draw at Leeds, leaving the club in sixth place in the Premier League. The Portuguese manager, who joined United from Sporting Lisbon, departs after 14 months in charge, having won 24 of his 63 matches—the third-lowest win record of any permanent United manager in history.
Under-18 coach Darren Fletcher will take temporary charge while the club searches for a permanent replacement. Amorim’s exit comes amid reported tensions with the club’s hierarchy. In a recent post-match press conference, he hinted at disagreements, stating he joined United to be “a manager, not a coach,” and suggested he would remain until 2027.
The Athletic reports that the decision to sack Amorim followed a “breakdown in relations behind the scenes,” with chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox involved in the process. United will be required to pay full compensation under the terms of Amorim’s contract signed in November 2024.
This adds to financial pressures on minority co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who previously faced a £14.5 million payout to former manager Erik ten Hag and his staff after extending and then terminating his contract.
